The Utah Gumshoe: Finding Your Subject on Mother's Day

The Utah Gumshoe: Insurance Claims Trade Show Tips

Listen: Finding Your Subject on Mother's Day

Finding your subject on Mother's Day may be easier then you think. There’s an expression in the US Marshals Service: “Behind every fugitive is a woman.” Now, that woman may be a wife or a girlfriend…or it may be a mother. You see, even the most hardened fugitive usually takes the time out to contact mom on Mother’s Day. And that means your deadbeat dad, your insurance fraudster or your skip may do the same. That also means that someone is going to have to sit outside mom’s house on surveillance (on Mother’s Day) in the hopes that the subject shows up. That may not go over well with your mother or your wife or your girlfriend, but that’s the nature of surveillance.

Sometimes the contact comes in the form of a telephone call. More often then not the subject crawls out of the woodwork and takes mom to lunch or dinner. Other times the subject attends a family barbecue or pot luck at mom’s house or another relative’s home. The good news is that Mother’s Day is always on a Sunday (the second Sunday in May, to be exact.) And that means it’s a weekend and any festivities associated with the holiday are generally held on that specific day. If you don’t know the whereabouts of your subject you’ll need to at least find mom’s address. Most of the proprietary databases available to private investigators offers searches for relatives and individuals associated with the subject. You should also run any and all license plates near mom’s house; especially out of state plates.

It’s common to take mom out for a nice brunch, lunch or dinner at her favorite eatery for Mother’s Day. I’m not talking Taco Bell so dispense with your gym shorts and tank top and wear something presentable should you need to follow your subject inside the restaurant for covert video. And, of course, that means you should be prepared with the ability to shoot covert video.

By the way, this same advice will serve you well, not only on Mother’s Day, but on mom’s birthday too.

Until next time,

This is Scott Fulmer, the Utah Gumshoe, reminding you the game…is afoot!
