Red Light Cameras in Texas Allegedly Unconstitutional

AMARILLO, TX - Lloyd Ward, a Dallas attorney, is alleging that red light cameras are unconstitutional. So far, a district judge agrees with the attorney. While the decision may offer some hope to drivers caught by the cameras and wishing to dispute the tickets, the decision is unlikely to remove Amarillo's cameras any time soon. Ward filed a lawsuit against American Traffic Solutions, the company operating Amarillo's red lights and cameras. The lawsuit alleges that the city's contract with the company gives American Traffic Solutions - a company without a PI license - the right to prosecute violators, but a Texas statute indicates that individuals need to have a PI license for that right.
