Online Missing Persons Search to Help PIs |
CHICAGO, IL – Chicago graduate student David Gimelfarb has gone missing in a remote area of Costa Rica. Rescue crews are searching for the student, but in the meantime friends have established a Facebook page to help bring Gimelfarb home. PIs agree that social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace can help in a missing persons case, although many note that such resources tend to be underused. Gimelfarb’s friends and family say that the social networking page has already been instrumental in pressuring the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica to send U.S. military helicopters with infrared sensors to look for the student. |

Lindsay Lohan Hires PIs |
LOS ANGELES, CA – Singer-actress Lindsay Lohan’s Hollywood Hills home has been burglarized. Lohan has reportedly moved to more secure lodgings while her friends, family and employees assess the damage. Lohan’s father has hired PIs, convinced that someone close to the actress and singer orchestrated the burglary. Local police have launched an investigation as well. |

Should Companies Have to Obey Like PIs? |
NEW YORK, NY – Canadian model Liskula Cohen had unpleasant and possibly defamatory things written about her in a blog and went to court to reveal the name of her online verbal attacker. Now, the blogger, Rosemary Port, plans to sue Google for revealing her identity when she had an expectation of anonymity. Google has noted that court orders require them to reveal necessary information in these cases. |

Police Cameras Raise Surveillance Issue |
DAYTON, OH – Dayton police are pursuing cruiser cameras with automated license plate readers. The cameras scan license plates and automatically match plates with the plates of known felons, suspects and stolen cars. If a match is found, police in the cruiser are alerted with a signal. The Dayton police will be receiving five such scanners, and while police say the devices will help fight crime, local privacy advocates are worried that the cameras will violate privacy.

Day Care Child Abuse Case Weighing Polygraph Accuracy |
NAPLES, FL - Day care owner Giovannina Guardascione has pleaded no contest to aggravated child abuse, but took a lie detector test to prove she did not shake a baby in her care. The polygraph determined that Guardascione was not lying when she said she had not harmed the baby. Now, the court must decide whether to believe the plea or the test, since the two are contradictory.
