Experts Warn About Surveillance in Beijing |
BEIJING, CHINA – Intelligence agencies in the US and Europe are warning that the Chinese government is using the Olympics to bring surveillance to new heights in an alleged attempt to gather commercial trade secrets as well as other forms of data. U.S. Senator Sam Brownback revealed earlier this summer documents issued by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Public Security Bureau. The documents show plans to install very extensive Internet surveillance tools on motel and hotel computers. Some hotels are allegedly installing monitoring devices in guest rooms. |

US PIs Slated to Help McCanns |
LONDON, ENGLAND - The parents of Madeleine McCann, the little girl who went missing at a European resort, have hired US private investigators to help solve the case. The name of the US PI firm has not yet been released, but the firm allegedly hires former CIA, FBI and special forces agents. These PIs will take over the investigation from Spanish firm Metodo 3, which has until now led the search. Metodo 3 will continue to aid the US investigators. The Find Madeleine Fund has allegedly inked a £500,000 six-month contract with the US PIs |

Big Apple to Big Brother? NYC Surveillance Plan Sparks Debate |
NEW YORK, NY - The NYPD is developing a plan to keep tabs on every vehicle that enters Manhattan. The plan, called Operation Sentinel, would photograph every license plate, record when it came into the city, and also note the level of radioactivity of each vehicle. This proposal is being touted as preventive measures against terrorism. Civil libertarians are concerned about the amount of information the city would be gathering and storing, and how that would affect one's civil rights. |

Pirate Investigators, Not Private Investigators |
MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - Central Michigan University filed a complaint last week with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG) against MediaSentry, a company that is regularly used by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to gather evidence in music piracy cases. The complaint accuses MediaSentry of operating as a private investigator without being licensed. The university is asking DLEG to force MediaSentry to stop investigating Michigan residents until they obtain a Michigan license as a private investigator. |
