This week, the PInow.com staff was intrigued by many international and domestic stories related to private investigations. We were also very excited to read about one of our very own PInow.com members in the news: |
Pennsylvania Private Eye works High Profile Murder Case involving 13-year-old Girl |
BUENA VISTA, PA. - A 13 year-old girl is being charged as a juvenile for criminal homocide following the shooting of her father. Eddie Rose of TFS Investigations (a PInow.com advertiser in Allegheny County, PA) was hired by the girl's attorney. The investigative professional has been quoted by the media as saying that his latest case is unmatched. As part of his job, Rose had to enter the home where the crime took place in order to gather evidence and take photographs. The extreme filth, rotten food, flies and maggots, and the visible feces are something that Rose has never before found in a home. |

Internet “Spy” Shown to Be Ineffective |
MERRILLVILLE, IN - This past week, a journalist at the Post-Tribune took on a unique assignment: she went undercover to investigate the online detective services that promise to offer public records and information about anyone you choose. The writer was able to confirm what many private investigators already know: Internet “investigations” provide less information than Google, in many cases. Although the journalist’s wedding announcement was online, the detective search she ran through Net Detective listed her husband as “single” and did not recognize her existence at all. To add insult to injury, the reporter was overcharged for the “services” she got from the online search engine and found her inbox flooded with phishing scams. Her findings? Not only was the online site bogus, but they are unlicensed, even though private detectives in her state need to have a valid license. |

Private Investigation Ordered of Interstate 35 Bridge Collapse |
MINNESOTA - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has said that in addition to an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, a parallel investigation will be conducted by forensic engineering firm Wiss, Janney and Elstner. An outside firm will also be hired to look at inspection practices of other bridges in the state, which will get emergency inspections in the wake of the collapse. |

Massachusetts Workplace Theft Investigations Guidelines Reviewed |
MASSACHUSETTS - The Appeals Court of Massachusetts has recently reviewed guidelines for workplace theft investigations. The review stems from an incident at a Home Depot store in 2003. Allegedly, $1,000 was missing from a cashier's drawer. Two investigators from the store's loss prevention group tried to force the cashier into signing a confession by using intimidation. When the cashier signed the confession, she was fired and the case went to court. She was later convicted but when she appealed, the court ruled when the voluntary nature of an employee's confession is in question, the judge in the case must hold a hearing on the admissibility of the confession. |
