PI Firm Under Fire
Jackson City officials hired an out-of-state private-investigation firm to look into allegations made against Jackson police Chief Ervin Portis. Portis is accused of creating a hostile work environment. However, Risk Management Association Inc. of Raleigh, N.C., is not licensed in Michigan. Alberta Energy Utilities Board Accused of Spying
Environmentalists and homeowners are alleging that the Alberta Energy Utilities Board hired a private investigator who posed as an irate landowner and participated in conference calls. Private investigator Don MacDonald of Fort Saskatchewan was undercover as a landowner in conference calls organized by the Alberta Environmental Network. He was speaking with property owners and attorneys opposed to a number of Alberta Energy Utilities Board projects, most notably a proposed Edmonton-to-Calgary line and an additional project that would allow Alberta to sell power to the U.S. The Alberta Energy Utilities Board is defending its decision, saying that it hired four investigators to ensure that landowners did not become violent. However, property owners are saying that the investigators eavesdropped on their conversations, violating solicitor-client privilege.
