PI Seeks Recount

BINGHAM COUNTY, ID – Bingham County voters hired a PI after a mistake may have been made during a May 27 Republican Primary Election. Even after the problems were fixed and the votes recounted, the results were the same: Dave Johnson won by more than 500 votes. Voters hired PI Neil Leary to ensure that all votes were actually counted in the election. Leary recommended a re-vote, but County Clerk Sara Staub claims that Leary never even researched the voting system and never looked into how the mistake was made in the first place. The voters who hired the PI are still not sure whether they will request a re-vote.

Insurers Use PIs, Spark Ire

OTTAWA, CANADA – In Canada, complaints have been filed with the federal privacy commissioner against the insurance industry. According to the commissioner, of the 35 complaints filed in 2007, 10% involved the insurance industry and its use of PIs to gather personal information. The commissioner has noted that she has concerns that PIs gathering information about possible insurance fraud suspects may inadvertently gather personal information – and invade the privacy of – innocent third party bystanders. One possible solution might be clearer contracts between insurance companies and PI firms – contracts that would outline policies about videotaping anyone not part of an investigation.
