Illinois Bill to get Overhaul

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois Legislature is considering a bill that would make key changes to the Illinois death penalty defense fund. Originally, the fund was established to ensure that defendants on death row had the financial resources to launch a defense. However, media reports last year discovered that some PIs being paid out of the fund were from out of state and were charging the fund hundreds of dollars per hour to fly to Illinois. One PI charged $11,000 in travel costs alone. The bill will require more transparency in the costs that attorneys and PIs charge.

PI Fees Cause Flap in Anderson

ANDERSON, SC - Gracie Floyd, an Anderson County Council member, used the Freedom of Information Act to get documents that prove the county is spending thousands of dollars on PIs. She claims that the decision to hire PIs should have been voted on as the PIs were paid with taxpayer dollars.

Online Affairs Have Real-World Consequences

LONDON, ENGLAND - Divorce attorneys are noting that names such as Twitter and Facebook are increasingly appearing in their files as more couples divorce over cyber-infidelities. Websites such as Second Life allow spouses to act out fantasy lives while social networking sites such as MySpace allow spouses to meet new partners online. Last year, real-life couple Amy Taylor and David Pollard made headlines when they filed for divorce after Taylor caught Pollard acting out a cheating fantasy on their Second Life account. Divorce attorneys note that we are most likely going to see more cases like this in the near future.

PIs Gain Foothold in China

GUANGZHOU, CHINA - Although Chinese authorities refuse to license PI businesses, there is some evidence that PI services are becoming more accepted there. In Guangzhou, the Guangzhou Jiutouniao Survey Firm was granted a trademark for its business, allowing it to operate. The company offers services ranging from survey taking to investigations. At least 200 companies in Guangzhou offer PI services, although many position themselves as consultant firms since the Ministry of Public Security does not authorize PI services.
