False DUI Arrests to Be Wiped Clean Under New Bill |
SALEM, OR - An unusual case involving a PI has sparked a bill in Oregon. In 2007, a police officer in Corvallis arrested four drivers for driving under the influence. The drivers were ultimately proven to be sober and as a result of the arrests, false-arrest lawsuits were filed. The police officer resigned and relocated to Idaho. There, he began a PI firm specializing in helping people defend themselves against DUI claims. Partly as a result of those incorrect charges and subsequent lawsuits, a bill in the Oregon Legislature would allow people to clear their arrest records of false state or municipal traffic offenses, including DUI charges. |

PIs Needed to Track Down Abusers in Canada |
OTTAWA, CANADA - The Canadian government is attempting to find students and staff members accused of abuse in First Nations residential schools. In order to find the accused – some of whom may be very elderly or deceased today – the government will hire 10 PI firms. As part of a 2006 compensation agreement, 12,000 claims of abuse will be filed, costing about $4 billion in settlements. So far, about $350 million in settlements has been paid by the government in residential school abuse cases. Now, PIs across Canada will be hired to find the defendants in these claims to give them a chance to face the accusations. PIs who have security clearance, knowledge of First Nations issues, travel ability and experience with similar cases are encouraged to apply. |

PI Offers Security After Pink Slips |
STAMFORD, CT - There's no doubt that there are more pink slips being handed out across the country. For some PIs, that means more security work. Companies often hire extra security detail - including PIs - to escort employees from the building after they have been fired. The security is to protect company property and other employees in case the fired employee acts out. Vito Colucci Jr. of Colucci Investigations says he gets many calls from companies seeking security help for layoffs now, but he rarely has seen an employee act out. Colucci notes that last year was his busiest year, with many divorce cases and security requests. |

PIs Wanted to Find Homeowners in the UK |
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Margaret Beckett, a housing minister, has asked the government to crack down on absentee homeowners. Local councils have been instructed to hire PIs, if needed, to find homeowners who have been absent for awhile in order to ensure that homes do not sit vacant. There are about 700,000 residences in England that are not in use and some 300,000 of these have been vacant for at least six months. |
