A Look at Technology and PIs Over the Last Two Decades |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – IT has shaped the PI industry in the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. In the 1990s, some unscrupulous PIs were buying information from people who were using computer technology to legally access the information. By the early 2000s, some experts claim PIs were using Trojan horses to glean information from computers. Experts note that due diligence investigations and investigations for assurance have become more important over the past two decades as high-profile cases of fraud (such as the case involving Bernard Madoff) have come to light. Security cases have also become more important, especially after September 11, 2001. |

Elin Nordegren Hires PI |
LONDON, ENGLAND – Elin Nordegren, wife of troubled golfer Tiger Woods, has hired a PI, allegedly to check Woods’ assets and wealth, possibly as a precursor to divorce proceedings. Nordegren will likely divorce Woods in California, where divorce laws tend to be more generous to ex-spouses. Nordegren likely wants to know the full extent of Woods’ wealth before filing. Experts believe the pro golfer is worth about $1 billion. |

New Year Brings New Laws for Illinois |
SPRINGFIELD, IL – A number of new laws went into effect in Illinois on the stroke of midnight, 2010. Among these was new legislation concerning trial funding for death penalty cases. The previous system of funding allows a few dishonest PIs, trail experts and others to charge huge fees. There was no system in place to check or limit fees. The current legislation requires PIs and others to submit fee statements. The state treasurer's office now has the power to review these statements. |

PIs Worry That Alabama Industry Laws Too Lax |
HUNTSVILLE, AL – PInow.com Advertiser Bill Posey, of Posey Investigations, wants state laws changed to protect PI customers from fraudulent and unscrupulous PIs in the industry. He notes that people often approach PIs about very sensitive matters and he feels that current laws do not do enough to protect these clients. Posey notes that the a current bill in state legislature would create a board to oversee licensing and regulation of the PI industry, something Posey thinks is sorely needed. |
