A company that is regularly used by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to gather evidence against individuals in copyright infringement cases is coming under increasing fire for operating without a private investigator’s license as required by many states.
The latest trouble for MediaSentry Inc. comes in the form of two recent and nearly identical complaints filed against it with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG).
One of the complaints was filed last week by Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. The university is asking the state agency to compel MediaSentry to cease all copyright-related investigations of Michigan residents until it obtains a license to operate as a private investigator in the state. The other complaint, which asks for the same action, was filed in June by an unnamed student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The Police Department is working on a plan to track every vehicle that enters Manhattan to strengthen the city’s guard against a potential terror attack, the department’s chief spokesman said.
The proposal — called Operation Sentinel — relies on integrating layers of technologies, some that are still being perfected. It calls for photographing, and scanning the license plates of, cars and trucks at all bridges and tunnels and using sensors to detect the presence of radioactivity.
Data on each vehicle — its time-stamped image, license plate imprint and radiological signature — would be sent to a command center in Lower Manhattan, where it would be indexed and stored for at least a month as part of a broad security plan that emphasizes protecting the city’s financial district, the spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said. If it were not linked to a suspicious vehicle or a law enforcement investigation, it would be eliminated, he said.
“Our main objective would be to, through intelligence, find out about a plot before it ever got to a stage where a nuclear device or a dirty bomb was coming our way,” Mr. Browne said. “This provides for our defense after a plot has already been launched and a device is on its way.”

Madeleine McCann’s parents have hired a US private investigator firm made up of former CIA and FBI agents and special forces veterans as part of a renewed push to find their missing daughter, it was reported.
The team are said to be taking over primary responsibility for the investigating into Madeleine’s disappearance, although the Spanish firm Metodo 3, which has until now spearheaded the search, will continue to follow up information from Spain and Portugal.
The news comes shortly after Portuguese police shelved the case and released a 30,000 page dossier detailing their investigation.

British and American intelligence agencies are warning that the Chinese Communist Party is using the Olympic Games as a goldmine for gathering intelligence, extortion and commercial secrets.
Athletes, officials and traveling fans from Britain and the US were advised about the level of privacy and security they should expect during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but the reality could be chilling.
On June 29, U.S. Senator Sam Brownback revealed documents he obtained from several large hotel chains, which were issued by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Public Security Bureau.
The documents demanded that Beijing hotels install invasive Internet communication monitoring tools, or face fines and the loss their operating licenses within China.
