Since December, David Harvey has been on the court, volunteering as a basketball coach for the Richmond Youth Sports League’s Timberwolves. Assisting his brother-in-law, who is the head coach of the team of boys ranging from 12-14 years old, Harvey showed the children a thing or two about the game, helped during practices and cheered them on as they scored for the team.
No one knew Harvey, 34, was a non-compliant sex offender.
No one knew he had served a prison term for attempted murder.
It wasn’t until a 14-year-old team member came home with a bruise after a night of ball practice that the child’s parents started asking questions.

A wave of claims that children have been sexually assaulted or improperly treated in or around their San Antonio schools in recent weeks has prompted questions about whether school officials are doing enough to protect students and, in one case, possibly sparked a false allegation from a fourth-grader.
The claims, nine in all, have emerged in San Antonio’s three largest independent school districts — Northside, North East and San Antonio — since late December.
They have ranged from allegations that teachers had same-sex encounters with high school students to a claim a man tried to abduct a 6-year-old boy from an elementary school bathroom.
More than half the reports involved strangers not believed to be school employees. All are under investigation.

A convicted sexual predator was found to be working as a school referee in Knox County. And on top of that, he’s now charged with possession of child pornography.
But how did David Aaron Becker get hired to work with children? It was actually easier than you would think.
Becker only had to fill out an application and was taken at his word that he was not a convicted felon.
No one asked Becker if he was a registered sex offender.
No background check was ever conducted because there’s no law saying referee’s have to be checked out.

A Camden County man was arrested when he came here to meet a person who he thought was a 14-year-old boy for a sexual encounter, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Blitz said Wednesday. The “child” was an undercover investigator.
Anthony Mastrando, 48, a postal carrier from Covington Drive in the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township, was charged with attempting to lure a minor to sexually assault the child and attempted sexual assault, Blitz said.
Mastrando, who is involved with youth groups at Covenant House and his church in Sicklerville, is being held in the Atlantic County jail on $100,000 cash bond, no 10 percent, Blitz said. Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury made a condition of bail that Mastrando have no contact with children under the age of 18.

A volunteer at the Calvary Reformed Church on East 8th Street has been charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct against a 9-year-old girl.
The man, 50, has not been formally charged, so his name has not been released. He has posted bond and will be charged on October 31 with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
He teaches computer classes part-time at the church, and last Thursday volunteered at their monthly food giveaway. The girl and her family were waiting their turn when, according to Pastor Blaine Newhouse, the man broke church policy and was seen alone with the girl in a computer lab.
“It should not have happened,” Newhouse said, “and when it was discovered that it did happen there was an immediate reprimand and an underscoring again of our abuse policy that this will not be tolerated.”

In 1988, after a door-to-door cleaning supply salesman from Chicago raped a 19-year-old American Fork woman in her home, the city enacted tough new laws to protect residents from solicitors.
In recent weeks, after a lawsuit by cleaning company Kirby of Utah and Idaho and some of its independent distributors, the city enacted a new, less stringent ordinance that requires only a statewide, not a nationwide, criminal background check.

As they chatted online, the men might have imagined what the 15-year-old looked like.
They might have pictured a pretty blond girl, maybe a brunette.
Ed Sexton’s smooth bald head and the bristling whiskers of his mustache almost certainly didn’t come to mind.
But on the Internet, you can be whoever you say you are, and Sexton’s chat profile says he’s a 15-year-old girl in Lincoln.
The last part’s right.
Sexton is a police investigator in Lincoln who this summer busted three men he says tried to meet him for sex when he posed online as an underage girl.
