BUENA VISTA, Pa. - Inside the home’s front door lay a bare, blood-soaked mattress and box spring.
The house was infested with fleas, the plumbing was backed up, much of the furniture was broken and the stench of cat urine filled the air.
Matthew Booth, 34, was lying face-up on the mattress when he was shot in the head early July 30. His 13-year-old daughter told investigators she used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot him in the face, a crime that her attorney said was precipitated by years of sexual abuse.

It’s a good time to be a private investigator in the greater Los Angeles area. They both have launched an all-out war and the report claims that both are hiring private investigators to dig up new bombshells to use as weapons in their custody battle, the magazine reports. Each of these characters can trace parts of her heritage to Nancy Drew.
Trixie Belden (1948): Thirty-nine books were written for this series between 1948 and 1986. A bit younger than Nancy Drew, 13-year-old Beatrix ‘Trixie’ Belden lives at Crabapple Farm with her parents and three brothers. Along with her new neighbor, Honey Wheeler, Trixie solves mysteries that baffle authorities. She has a tendency to jump to conclusions, but her hunches often prove to be correct.
Herculeah Jones (1994): Written by North Carolina native Betsy Byers, this series is composed of six books about 13-year-old Herculeah Jones, whose father is a policeman and mother is a private investigator. Not only does he have a wealth of experience as an investigator in the private sector but he has a degree in psychology. It shows throughout his book, The More You Know.” Mr. Johnson reviewing this book for private investigators points out “This is a book you (private investigators) can hand out to the distraught wife who has come to your office as the victim of an adulterous affair. I wish I had Bill Mitchell’s book when I started my agency in 1990’s. “

After headlining two failed comedies, Andy Richter allows himself to dream . . . moderately.
Conan O’Brien’s former sidekick enters the TV series fray again as an accountant who accidentally becomes a private investigator in the new NBC comedy “Andy Barker, P.I.” (premiering Thursday night at 9:30 on WHDH, Ch. 7).
“It doesn’t need to be the new ’Heroes’ or the new sensation,” Richter said in a recent conference call with reporters. “I would like a sort of medium success that chugs along for four or five years that makes people happy and makes us comfortable. As somebody that’s in the comedy business looking at the big runaway success comedies, there are so many whose success I applaud and so many whose success I’m absolutely baffled by and think, ’This is what people want?’ To hope for runaway success is sort of like hoping to be hit by lightning because it will either kill you or make you a superhero. You don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s just too kind of volatile and weird.”

Andy Richter steps into comfy comedy territory in the new NBC series, “Andy Barker, P.I.”
The fictional Andy is an accountant-turned-detective; the real one is a mere actor. Still, they are kind of the same guy.
“The character (has) sort of fundamental decency,” said Jonathan Groff, the show’s co-creator.
That’s clear after someone lies to him, thumps him on the head and is about to shoot him. “He’s angry that he’s been lied to,” co-creator Conan O’Brien said. “He has kind of a Midwestern (sensibility).”
He’s an everyday schlub, a nice guy who gets overlooked. The real-life Andy knows the turf.
“I’ve sort of been cursed with a toddler’s body and a face to match,” Richter said. “I’m not going to get a lot of leading-man roles.”
It’s a useful curse. It has taken Richter from being O’Brien’s late-night sidekick to small roles in many movies and lead ones in three situation comedies.

Sean Chercover’s Big City, Bad Blood is the best detective novel you will read this year. Chercover delivers the goods - as real, bloody and in-your-face as only a former private eye can.
The author’s very tangible detective, Ray Dudgeon, leaps from the pages, shoves a gun in your face and demands attention. Ray is to crime fiction what Daniel Craig is to James Bond: cocky, unpredictable, tender-hearted, unscrupulous, lean and mean.
Ray’s business and love life are doing just fine -until he meets Bob Loniski. Bob’s a location scout with Continental Pictures in Hollywood. While checking sites for a new action picture in Chicago (Ray’s home turf), Bob and other renters get taken by a dirty landlord who has suspected ties to the Chicago Outfit.
Bob is asked to be a witness for the prosecution. When a fellow renter turns up dead, Bob realizes he needs protection.
