TAIPEI, TAIWAN – Model Lin Chiling is suing Next Magazine, alleging the publication had her under surveillance and trespassed on private property, violating her privacy. The model is also claiming the magazine is responsible for slander. The magazine allegedly and illegally kept tabs on the model and broke into her home to gather information about the model’s love life. Chiling notes she had to hire PIs after images of the interior of her home were published in the magazine and the model became convinced that spy cameras may have been installed in her home.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU), however, the cameras only push crime outside of the lens’s reach. According to the ACLU, cameras for surveillance are ineffective, expensive for the taxpayers and undesirable. Authorities note, on the other hand, surveillance cameras often help them catch criminals and solve crimes.

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND - The Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Bill in New Zealand is now headed for the Justice and Electoral Select Committee after passing its first reading. If successfully passed, the bill will replace the current Private Investigators and Security Guards Act. Under the new bill, more security personnel – including bodyguards, bouncers, and some private security staff would be obliged to have a certificate of approval or licensing. A new body, the Complaints, Investigation and Prosecution Unit, would regulate the industry and investigate claims of wrong-doing. Some security professionals would require mandatory training.
The guard at the mall was wearing a Kevlar vest, something that saved his life when a gun was fired during an arrest at the mall. Currently, the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act does not require security companies to offer their employees body amour or bullet-proof vests.

STAMFORD, CT - There’s no doubt that there are more pink slips being handed out across the country. For some PIs, that means more security work. Companies often hire extra security detail – including PIs, in some cases – to escort employees from the building after they have been given the golden handshake. The security is to protect company property and other employees in case the fired employee acts out. Vito Colucci Jr. of Colucci Investigations says he gets many calls from companies seeking security help for layoffs now, but he rarely has seen an employee act out. Colucci notes that last year was his busiest year so far, with many divorce cases and security requests.

The police high command has issued a raft of guidelines which will allow police officers up to the rank of Assistant Commissioner to be engaged in private work as of November 1, 2008.

The strict guidelines for JCF members engaging in private work were outlined in the latest Force Orders sent to divisional commanders Thursday.

Under the new arrangements, police officers can now be engaged for employment as taxi or bus drivers, private body guards, private investigators, bill collectors, private security guards and any other forms of employment prescribed by the Commissioner of Police.

In addition officers for private service are to be supplied from those off duty, on leave but will not include those who are sick, or on compassionate leave, interdiction or suspension.

The unprecedented move to allow police officers to take on private work was hammered out in the Heads of Agreement signed between the government and the police federation.

Chairman of the Federation Raymond Wilson told RJR news that police men and women are satisfied with the new arrangements.

“We are very happy in deed that out of the last negotiations we have been able to gain access to this new work arrangement.

We considered it a work in progress, with a new work arrangement, the management system of course will have to be tested and one of the best way to test any new system is to put it in work and to see the flaws that will emerge and to determine as we go along how do we fix it,” he said.

A schedule of hourly rates to be charged has also been set out in the Force Orders based on the rank of the officer engaged.

The rates are from a low of $650 for Constables to a high of $3700 for Assistant Commissioners.

Employers are being advised to apply to divisional commanders for the continuation of police private services no later that next Wednesday.

The policy guidelines are to be reviewed every six months.

With women celebrities opting for trained women bodyguards, more and more women are going in for a special martial training program in Mumbai.

To meet the growing demand for women bodyguards, a private security services consultancy has set up a special training program with personal grooming session for lady bodyguards at Kandivali and Worli areas in the metropolis.

The training spearheaded by Raj Talele, a private detective by profession involves grooming of women both physically and mentally to work as bodyguards.

Talale said that he embarked on the training program as he failed to meet the demand for a women bodyguard by a lady client.

“I can only appoint a lady bodyguard for a lady (celebrity) provided the bodyguard is well trained. I went to various security agencies in search for a lady bodyguard but couldn’t find any trained lady bodyguard. Hence, I came with the idea to train ladies myself which will benefit the girls,” Talele said.

The training incorporates various types of martial arts such as the basic styles of aikido, judo karate and use of different weapons. Besides, imparting them with all the necessary techniques of fighting against enemies, the trainees are also given driving lessons and taught English speaking classes.

The training program, which initially started with two girls, has now twenty professional and potential lady bodyguards on its rolls.

“There are no barriers between a male and a female, and so also both are advancing in this particular field. Ladies from the entertainment industries and lady politicians’ need lady bodyguards as a lady can understand a lady’s needs more than anybody else. Therefore, a lady bodyguard is the need of the hour,” said Sarita, a lady trainee.

The required age to join the training squad is between the age of 13 and 30 provided the aspirants are physically fit and healthy. There are no restrictions as far as their marital status is concerned.

The organization is receiving application not only from Mumbai but also form other parts of Maharashtra from eager aspirants.

The organization also provides job opportunities to the trainees after two and a half months training in their respective fields.

When the average person hears the term “executive protection” they may imagine bodyguards for CEOs and top business people. While security for executives is an important part of executive protection services - especially today, when CEOs and other company members travel overseas, sometimes to less-than-safe destinations for business trips - executive protection is not always just about personal safety.
In fact, the top executive protection companies and services are expanding to offer a range of business services, including:

1) Security for cargo.

Shipments of cargo easily can get lost, mislaid, delayed, or otherwise harmed while in transit. When a very important shipment must make it to its destination safely, it can be more cost-effective to hire executive protection services rather than risk losing the shipment. Trained security personnel can accompany the shipment from its original destination to its final destination, ensuring that the shipment is properly handled, stored, shipped correctly and delivered as promised. In an age where even simple packages can be handled by a dozen people or more, this sort of protection offers great peace of mind to executives and company owners.

2) Overseas security.

As many companies go overseas to save on money and expand their customer bases, overseas security has become big business. Offering bodyguard and personal protection to executives overseas is still part of the equation, but so is protecting against fraud and safeguarding company assets and property abroad. Security personnel often are trained in various languages so that they can investigate any signs of wrongdoing and can protect against any actions against a company’s image, trademark or assets.

Most companies are unaware of the risks their assets and employees can face. Therefore, many executive protection companies offer risk audits or threat assessments that can help companies evaluate worst-case scenarios, weak points in current security systems and where threats might come from in the future. This can be invaluable to help a company evaluate action to take to prevent security melt downs.

If a security problem does occur, executive protection services often can move in and respond while the problem is relatively small to prevent a larger tragedy. For example, if someone makes threats against a company or its founder, verbal threats often are not enough to get the police involved. However, trained executive protection professionals can respond, stepping up security and even using surveillance to ensure that someone making threats is not making plans to cause serious harm.

5) Emergency plans.

Executive protection companies often will work with companies to develop worst-case-scenario plans. These can include adding panic rooms and covert alarm signals to companies to help team members react appropriately and safely to a threat. It can include emergency drills, as well as the development of escape routes.
