AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – New rules in parts of New Zealand will mean that PIs and local police will work together more closely. Search warrants will be available for joint investigations, and police will be required to investigate cases examined by PIs. Advocates of the new rules believe that the rules will help prevent private investigations that are not considered by police. In the past, PIs and their clients have been frustrated when evidence is collected by PIs but police do not act on the information.

RIVERSIDE, CA – The Board of Supervisors has approved more funding for investigation services offered to criminal defendants with limited financial means. Attorneys who handle defense cases for indigent defendants requested more money for PIs and their services. Initially, the county executive wanted an additional $90,000 per month for these services. Currently, $60,000 per month is used for the purpose. The Board of Supervisors agreed to increase that amount to $75,000.

AUSTIN, TX – Bishop Gregory Aymond of the Diocese of Austin has hired a PI to investigate the death of Father Jesse Euresti. Euresti was killed by Manuel Martin Torres Saldana, a man who confessed to the killing. Saldana was the caretaker for Euresti and lived in Euresti’s retirement home. Saldana also claimed that the two were involved in a romantic relationship. Saldana confessed that he killed Euresti after the priest threatened to evict him from his home following an argument. Saldana has been sentenced to 37 years in prison.

AUSTIN, TX - Private investigator Les Johnson, helped to prove David Lozano’s innocence. Lozano had a shootout with a police officer, and was accused of firing first, and attempted capital murder. Johnson used many tactics to clear Lozano’s name, including putting pegs in the bullet holes attached to strings to figure out the trajectory of the bullets fired by the police officer. “I thought this guy is telling the truth,” said Johnson of Lozano. He helped to get the attempted capital murder case dismissed and Lozano freed from jail.

WINCHESTER, MA - A PI’s surveillance camera recently led to the arrest of William J. Austin Jr. Austin was arrested as a result of PI work conducted for the benefit of another member of the community. That resident had reported money missing from his home and contacted a PI agency to set up surveillance cameras. Austin has admitted to entering the home and taking the money, but alleges it is the only time he has entered the victim’s apartment by himself.

LOS ANGELES, CA - Daniel LaPorte, he went missing in 2005, allegedly ran marijuana into Mexico on a regular basis. His parents hired PIs to find out what happened to the young man, and reportedly paid more than $100,000 to the team of PIs. Recently, the case came to a grisly close when human remains were discovered in Baja, California. The remains were concealed in a barrel of chemicals, but were positively identified as the remains of LaPorte.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - The City Council of Manukau City in South Auckland has been using PIs for the past 18 months to crack down on those who deface property with graffiti. The PIs have allowed authorities to arrest more perpetrators for defacing buildings and other property. Now, the City Council is warning would-be taggers that continued use of PIs mean that anyone damaging property is likely to be caught.
