A background check of Kenton Drew Astin, 39, might have given University of Colorado officials pause before hiring him to work at the University Memorial Center. A check would have shown that he was accused of stabbing a 21-year-old man in Longmont before some 20 onlookers in 2001 and that he was later found not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of first-degree attempted murder, assault and felony menacing.

Your child’s soccer coach, your landscaper, the handyman? Do you know who these people are?
“There are essentially unhealthy people out there, predators that come into our lives looking like and acting like they’re just good natured people,” said security expert, Robert Siciliano. So to be sure you know who you’re dealing with, take your own precautions.
“People are realizing their personal security and they’re becoming much more responsible by getting background checks done,” said Siciliano.
For years, major companies have used background checks to look into prospective employees. But these days, business from the general public is booming at services like my-background-check-dot-com where you need only a few bits of information to research somebody without their knowledge.

A new Missouri law makes it faster and easier than ever to get a gun. Backers say it just cuts through red tape. Gun control advocates say it’s not a huge change, but believe lawmakers should have spent taxpayer dollars making more important revisions.
“Let’s say there’s a person who has an issue where they’re in fear for their life and they need to get a gun fairly quickly,” says Michael Meyer, of the St. Louis Association of Firearms Training Instructors. “If they had to wait ten days, that may be too late.”
Now when you walk in a gun store, you can walk out with a gun, in minutes not days.
“It makes it fair as far as protection,” Meyer says. “You won’t be a victim.”
Meyer says the law change does not mean Missouri is going soft on gun control, but simply cutting through red tape, and a duplication of background checks.

JOLIET — The three black cabinets sitting near the center of the white room comprise one of the state’s greatest crime-fighting tools.
Although a few technicians are working at terminals nearby, it’s quiet. The fans controlling the climate of the room provide the only sound accompanying the blinking lights from 20 hard drives stacked on the cabinets.
Visitors debate whether the silent machine is more reminiscent of I, Robot, WarGames or 2001, but they agree it’s obvious the system is up to something.
It’s the state’s Automated Fingerprint Identification System, and it’s searching its database of 45 million fingerprints.

Beginning in September, some of the volunteers in the city’s public schools will be required to submit to background checks.
Under the Norwalk Public Schools’ up-graded volunteer policy, which was unanimously approved by the Board of Education last week, volunteers over 18 years old must submit to background checks, including fingerprinting and reviews of national databases for involvement with criminal and child protective services, in cases where they would work with students in any type of out-of-school activities, chaperone overnight field trips, work in direct contact with students without the presence of a teacher, or have reason to communicate with students in person during out-of-school time or by phone or any electronic means during school or non-school hours.
Parents or guardians who volunteer to work in their own children’s schools during the school day under the supervision of an NPS teacher or administrator would not be required to submit to a background check including fingerprinting, nor would volunteers performing a one-time service in the presence of an NPS teacher or administrator.

For the first time since taking control of Congress, gun-control Democrats are taking on the National Rifle Association. The NRA seems to be nipping the effort in the bud.
At issue is whether Congress should loosen restrictions on local law enforcement agencies’ ability to gain access to gun-purchasing data to trace the movement of illegal guns around the nation.
The restrictions on such “trace data” began almost four years ago when Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan., succeeded in limiting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, or ATF, from publicly revealing information from its gun trace database.

Most adults who volunteer with youth teams and clubs that use property owned by the township or the school district would be required to get a criminal background check under an ordinance introduced by the Township Council last week.
The ordinance calls for a background check for any adult involved with “sporting activities, passive recreation groups, clubs or camps, trips or other activities whereby some control and responsibility for children under the age of 18 is assigned to some person other than a parent or caregiver.”

Senior Democrats have reached agreement with the National Rifle Association on what could be the first federal gun-control legislation since 1994, a measure to significantly strengthen the national system that checks the backgrounds of gun buyers.
The sensitive talks began in April, days after a mentally ill gunman killed 32 students and teachers at Virginia Tech University.
The shooter, Seung Hui Cho, had been judicially ordered to submit to a psychiatric evaluation, which should have disqualified him from buying handguns. But the state of Virginia never forwarded that information to the federal National Instant Check System, and the massacre exposed a loophole in the 13-year-old background-check program.
