NEW YORK, NY - A recent article in Newsweek suggests that many phones may have spyware software installed that allows people to wiretap conversations. Installing the software is as simple as downloading a ringtone and is done wirelessly. The spyware is hard to detect and even allows users to turn on headset microphones when the phone is off, especially allowing the user to listen in on non-telephone conversations as well. The spyware is cheap and easily accessible. PIs estimate that up to 3 percent of the mobile phones in America may be compromised with the spyware.
