SAN JOSE, CA - With the current economic situation, many retail companies are reporting higher-than-normal retail crime rates and more instances of shoplifting. This has many stores seeking security solutions, a fact that has many security companies and PIs busy. Creative Security Co. Inc. will be hiring up to 150 new employees over the next six months alone to cope with growing demand for on-site retail security. Law enforcement statistics in San Jose add credence to the growing shoplifting trend. The total number of shoplifting arrests was approximately 2,400 in 2008, up from 2,117 in 2007 and 2,160 in 2006. The Retail Industry Leaders Association reported that 84 percent of stores polled showed increased rates of theft and shoplifting in 2008.

It appears as if we can expect to see more criminal activity worldwide in 2009 than in past years. I believe a new trend will emerge that will result in an increased number of thefts and embezzlements from companies and employers involving people who have been previously honest. As more layoffs occur and the fear of more layoffs, otherwise honest people - upstanding citizens will look to “get what they can”.
