When a Boca Raton woman lost her dog, and hanging fliers and canvassing the neighborhood didn’t work, she hired some professional dogs to do the job.
Specially trained canines have been known to find drugs, bombs, even people, but now a local agency may have found a new client base.
Olivia is a Weimaraner who hates the vet. Over the weekend, she made a great escape.
“Right when she got to the door she got out of her collar and ran,” said owner Julie Ferguson.
For days, Ferguson tried to find her dog, putting up signs on street corners of Boca Raton, and asking for help from local police and fire departments.
“We were willing to do anything to get her back,” she said.
She never lost hope.
“I couldn’t sleep because that would mean I was giving up on her,” said Ferguson.
A friend told her about S.N.I.F. — Special Narcotic Investigative Force. The company specializes in corporate and private investigations–divorce, drugs, you name it.
S.N.I.F. Investigator, Andy Novotak wasn’t sure he’d ever use his dogs to find other dogs.
“I knew it was possible but I never thought I would get a call for it,” he said.
Novotak and Christa Bartley were hired to use their dogs to help find Olivia.
“We came here where she resides to where her scent is strongest, used some of her toys, her bedding, brought our dog in, got him real comfortable with the situation,” Novotak said.
The scent was tracked to a golf course near where Olivia had gotten lose. ‘Olivia’ the Weimaraner was found under a bush by ‘Ali’ the German Shepherd.
She’d suffered minor injuries after days on her own. Today she was visited by her human and canine rescuers.
“I just felt like it was really import for everybody who has animals, pets that they love to know about S.N.I.F.,” Ferguson said.
She said hiring a private agency to find her pooch was worth every penny.
“There’s just no way we would have found her without them. No way,” she said.
