While the only surveillance tape the state has doesn’t show the tragic accident, experts say there are some telling signs.
On the tape you can see Bollea’s yellow Toyota Supra stopping on Court Street before the light at Missouri as a silver Dodge Viper stops next to it. It appears to corroborate what one witness told investigators.

A private investigator revealed Friday in court that DNA — apparently from the person who abducted, sexually assaulted and killed Riley Fox, 3, of Wilmington — was left on crime-scene duct tape as well as in the girl’s rape kit. And it did not match her father, Kevin, who was charged in the case.

Background checks predate the internet by many decades. In the seventeenth centuries and earlier, when people tended to live in the same place over time, a background check might have consisted of a letter of introduction. A new employee or a new friend might have given his or her credentials by presenting a letter from someone credible. In the nineteenth century, greater mobility and larger cities made it harder for people to determine who could be trusted and who should be avoided. It’s no surprise, then, that the nineteenth century saw the birth of Sherlock Holmes and the PI industry.
