Trace Investigations was founded in 1990 by Don C. Johnson, the only Certified Legal Investigator in south central Indiana and one of less than 100 in the U.S. He is a founding member and past president of the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators; a member of the National Association of Legal Investigators, the National Council of Investigation and Security Services; the National Association of Professional Background Screeners; the World Association of Detectives and the Council of International Investigators. Also, he is a member of ASIS International and an associate member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Johnson is a published author and editor of PI Magazine, a national journal. He has contributed to two reference texts published by Lawyers and Judges Publishing Company.Johnson has appeared on national TV and lectured on suspicious death investigations, skip tracing and pre-employment screening.

In 2001, Johnson was appointed by the governor of Indiana to the Private Detective Licensing Board, a division of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency in Indianapolis, and he was elected president of the licensing board in January 2004. On July 1, 2007, he was reappointed to the board, now known as the Indiana Private Investigator and Security Guard Licensing Board. He is a former intelligence analyst with the U.S. Air Force Security Service, now known as the Air Intelligence Agency.
