Edmond J. (Ed) Martin, CFE, TCI retired from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in October 2001, after more than 26 years as a Special Agent.
Since January 2001, Martin has led Sage Investigations, LLC in both civil and criminal investigations (prosecution and defense), including complex investigations, corporate due diligence, and corporate fiduciary responsibilities. The investigations involved forensic due diligence for a major US Bank; embezzlement of employees of for profit and not for profit entities; assisted in the defense of a Federal bribery case; major mortgage fraud; and income tax and money laundering investigation.
In 2002, Martin received the "Circle of Excellence Award" from the 100 Club of Central
Texas and the "Service above Self Award" from the Austin Rotary Club, both for investigative excellence. In 2006, Martin received the TALI Meritorious Service Award. In 2007, after testing Martin received the coveted Texas Certified Investigator (TCI) from TALI. This award was made to only 40 of the 5,500 private investigators in the State of
Texas.
Martin has taught investigative techniques to Certified Fraud Examiners, the State Auditors Office, and Citizens Patrols. He has also spoken to a number of civic organizations. He was instrumental in the development of a Financial Investigative Techniques Course for Law Enforcement and Fraud Examiners.
During his tenure as a Special Agent, Martin investigated complex income tax evasion, fraud, and Ponzi schemes. Martin’s broad-based abilities include the investigation of complex indirect methods of proof, following the money trail in investigations of narcotics trafficking, financial fraud and money laundering. In addition, he was the lead investigator into the disappearance and murder of Madalyn Murray O’Hair and her children and the investigation of a number of Austin Ponzi schemes including Austin Forex International, Inc. These cases included complex analysis of financial data, tracing time, tracking victims and criminals, all of which culminated in a trial and conviction or a plea.
Martin has testified in Federal and State Court both as fact and as summary witness.
From 1984 to 1987 Martin worked for the Texas State Securities Board as a Supervising Examiner investigating securities fraud, including oil and gas, investment contracts, and other fraud schemes.
